【科普文分享】【諾貝爾獎闡釋】回到宇宙之初 尋找系外行星／還在學習 - Edward Ho
／／仰首觀天，或會心生疑惑，究竟宇宙從何而來，怎樣演化至今，太陽系外又有沒有其他行星？這幾個由心而發的問題，成為得獎物理學家 James Peebles 、 Michel Mayor 和 Didier Queloz 畢生追查的難題。
上世紀六十年代初，科學家對於宇宙的理解比現在淺。宇宙大爆炸理論中，指宇宙會縮回極小、極重，且極熱原點的假說亦無足夠證據支持。物理學家 Arno Penzais 與 Robert Wilson 在 1965 年發現了理宇宙背景微波 (Cosmic Microwave Background) ，當時 Peeble 曾推測，光線早在宇宙初期已出現，時間大概可追溯至宇宙誕生不到 38 萬年後。 Peeble 的團隊估計，遠古光線有機會蘊藏著宇宙起源的重要線索，並由此估算出宇宙初期溫度或超過攝氏 100 億度。
極高溫環境下，一對對電子及中微子 (neutrinos) 均可隨意物質化，導致質子和中子合成作用，合併的質子和中子則創造出原子核。 Peebles 在 1966 年更詳細計算出不同同位素 (isotopes) 會在此過程產生。他也通過宇宙背景微波溫度，嘗試計算中子和質子的密度，由此推算出不同同位素量。然而，他的結果與今日觀察數據有差異，他和其他天文學家就認為此差異是由於宇宙尚有大量未知物質和能量所組成，也是就暗能量和暗物質。他對於了解宇宙演化的貢獻並不止如此，他更提出宇宙膨脹，以及早期宇宙速度膨脹較快等理論，為解開宇宙之謎提供重要基礎。
除了 Peebles 獲得諾貝爾獎外，另外兩位天文學家 Michael Mayor 及 Didier Queloz 亦奪獎。
要尋找太陽系系外行星並不簡單：行星不如恆星般會發光，要從宇宙找出系外行星比大海撈針更困難。困難並不代表不可能， Mayor 及 Queloz 在 1995 年宣佈發現人類史上首個系外行星——飛馬座 51b 行星，並觀察到它是圍繞著類似太陽般的恆星運行。飛馬座 51b 大小可與土星比擬。他們所採用的方法，就是在行星圍繞時，恆星也會稍為偏移。在地球觀察起來，恆星就如前後震動般。透過測量恆星活動，研究人員就有方法尋找到這些消失在黑暗中的系外行星。他們首個系外行星發現，亦開拓了往後「追星」研究。 ／／
